Our plans to bring the former Tooting Police Station back into use have taken a step forward, with Merton Council granting full planning permission and listed building approval to deliver 62 high quality and sustainable new homes and the provision of a new community space.
The iconic former police station has not been operational since October 2020 when it was found to be surplus to requirements by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime. Proposals approved this week will see key features of the Grade II Listed building’s history and heritage maintained and enhanced, including the restoration of key elements of the external façade and reinstatement of an iconic domed room, as well as retention of internal staircases and terrazzo flooring. The development includes a single storey roof extension added to the property. A mix of studio, 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments will be created which will all benefit from sustainable features, including Air Source Heat Pumps and green roofs, as well as the provision of quality shared residential amenity space within the property and newly created landscaped courtyard replacing the old car parking areas.
Following consultation with residents and site neighbours on the plans, we are now looking forward to commencing site preparation works and engagement with local community groups to identify potential occupiers for the new ground floor community space.
